Celebrating Oktoberfest, wandering through corn mazes, and picking out the biggest pumpkin are a few of the ways to spend autumn weekends. From small towns to metropolis cities, harvest festivals are one of the best ways to experience the best of fall. If you’re planning a backyard gathering or community event with an autumnal theme, why not include fun games that everyone can play?
Here are a few yard game favorites that are great for crisp fall weather. They’re also terrific because almost every age and ability can play, without learning complicated rules or exerting high-impact activity. Cornhole Not only perfect for summer barbecues and campsites, cornhole is a fun game for tailgating and harvest festivals, too. Use an ACA regulation size cornhole set with heavy-duty pine wood boards and weather-resistant bean bags. Set up the boards about 27 feet apart on a flat surface. A field, park, or parking lot works great. Each team stands behind the cornhole boards, with team members alternating throwing their designated bean bags across the empty space and into the hole in the board. The team that scores the most bean bags in the holes wins. Each bag is worth 1 point. If you’re struggling to get bags in the hole, transition to scoring 3 points for getting the bean bag in the hole and 1 point for getting the bag on the board. This game is great for any age and skill level. Play with 2 or 4 players, trying to keep ages and skill level balanced for fairness. Tip: To keep others entertained while waiting to play, have a croquet set nearby. Croquet is a fun, classic game for up to 6 players, and takes up about the same amount of space as a cornhole game. Capture the Flag A Boy Scout favorite, this game requires only a handkerchief (or almost any other object) and a large open space. The playing field is divided into three areas, with two teams on opposite sides of a playing field with a neutral space in-between. After each team hides their flag in their area, the goal is to capture the opposing team’s flag. Here’s the tough part - if an opposing team member touches you, similar to tag, you head straight to that team’s jail, which is usually located in a corner on their side of the field. The only way to get out is to have one of your own team members touch you, and you’re free to start over again. This game is best for upwards of 10 to 20 players of kids ages 8+. Make sure you have an adult referee to settle any disputes and watch out for rule breakers. This game is fun in chilly autumn weather, perfect for older kids that need to burn some energy. Bocce Ball This game can be played in any open space, from small yards to soccer fields. It’s also easy to transport, making it easy to play anywhere you go. A bocce ball set includes 4 green balls, 4 red balls, a pallino, and a measuring tape. Enjoy hours of fun for 2 to 8 players with this setup-free game. Play bocce ball on a flat, level surface like dirt, gravel, or grass. Divide into two teams of 1, 2, or 4 players each. Divide the 8 balls evenly for each player. A player from Team 1 throws the pallino, a white ball, towards the end of the playing surface. The next player throws a colored bocce ball as close to the pallino as possible. This continues until all the balls have been played, and the closest ball wins. Use a measuring tape for extra close calls. Experience the crisp, cool weather of the outdoors and host a harvest festival for your family, friends, or community this fall. These games are easy to set-up and enjoy for hours on end.
