Celebrating Oktoberfest, wandering through corn mazes, and picking out the biggest pumpkin are a few of the ways to spend autumn weekends. From small towns to metropolis cities, harvest festivals are one of the best ways to experience the best of fall. If you’re planning a backyard gathering or community event with an autumnal theme, why not include fun games that everyone can play?
Here are a few yard game favorites that are great for crisp fall weather. They’re also terrific because almost every age and ability can play, without learning complicated rules or exerting high-impact activity. Cornhole Not only perfect for summer barbecues and campsites, cornhole is a fun game for tailgating and harvest festivals, too. Use an ACA regulation size cornhole set with heavy-duty pine wood boards and weather-resistant bean bags. Set up the boards about 27 feet apart on a flat surface. A field, park, or parking lot works great. Each team stands behind the cornhole boards, with team members alternating throwing their designated bean bags across the empty space and into the hole in the board. The team that scores the most bean bags in the holes wins. Each bag is worth 1 point. If you’re struggling to get bags in the hole, transition to scoring 3 points for getting the bean bag in the hole and 1 point for getting the bag on the board. This game is great for any age and skill level. Play with 2 or 4 players, trying to keep ages and skill level balanced for fairness. Tip: To keep others entertained while waiting to play, have a croquet set nearby. Croquet is a fun, classic game for up to 6 players, and takes up about the same amount of space as a cornhole game. Capture the Flag A Boy Scout favorite, this game requires only a handkerchief (or almost any other object) and a large open space. The playing field is divided into three areas, with two teams on opposite sides of a playing field with a neutral space in-between. After each team hides their flag in their area, the goal is to capture the opposing team’s flag. Here’s the tough part - if an opposing team member touches you, similar to tag, you head straight to that team’s jail, which is usually located in a corner on their side of the field. The only way to get out is to have one of your own team members touch you, and you’re free to start over again. This game is best for upwards of 10 to 20 players of kids ages 8+. Make sure you have an adult referee to settle any disputes and watch out for rule breakers. This game is fun in chilly autumn weather, perfect for older kids that need to burn some energy. Bocce Ball This game can be played in any open space, from small yards to soccer fields. It’s also easy to transport, making it easy to play anywhere you go. A bocce ball set includes 4 green balls, 4 red balls, a pallino, and a measuring tape. Enjoy hours of fun for 2 to 8 players with this setup-free game. Play bocce ball on a flat, level surface like dirt, gravel, or grass. Divide into two teams of 1, 2, or 4 players each. Divide the 8 balls evenly for each player. A player from Team 1 throws the pallino, a white ball, towards the end of the playing surface. The next player throws a colored bocce ball as close to the pallino as possible. This continues until all the balls have been played, and the closest ball wins. Use a measuring tape for extra close calls. Experience the crisp, cool weather of the outdoors and host a harvest festival for your family, friends, or community this fall. These games are easy to set-up and enjoy for hours on end. Don’t forget to offer prizes for bocce ball winners and cornhole champions! About Baden Backyard Baden Backyard is a top-notch source of outdoor backyard games. Summer is the season of outdoor adventures and family vacations, fun in the sun and relaxing on the beach. From mountain lakes to coastal oceans, bonding over a friendly competitive game and a couple of s’mores over a bonfire are great ways to make memories at the beach. Here are a few outdoor yard games that easily travel to the beach for hours of fun.
Cornhole With easy rules and simple strategy, cornhole is a great game to bring along for a sunny day at the beach. Originally created in Germany in the fourteenth century, this timeless game can be played by kids and adults of various abilities and strengths. Arrange a cornhole set with the two boards facing each other with about 25 feet between them. Depending on the players’ ages and abilities, the distance can be adjusted closer or farther away. Play with two or four players and have the opposing teams stand beside both boards. Each team throws into the board opposite, and in a simple game, the team with the most bean bags successfully in the hole wins the round. You can also play with best two out of three games, or however long you want to keep playing. For more structured games, a round is completed when all of the bags have been tossed. A successful bean bag throw results in 3 points. Keep playing rounds until reaching a team reaches 21 points, making them the winner. Pick a high-quality cornhole set durable enough to travel, making it easy to pick up and go to your next summer beach day or autumn tailgate event. Volleyball Volleyball is one of the most fun games to play on the beach. Great for older kids and adults, this outdoor game is easy to set up and take with you on-the-go. A full game of volleyball can include up to six players on each side, making it easy to include larger groups. After assembling a durable volleyball set, line the court with boundary lines 60’ by 30’. The server must serve the volleyball from behind the boundary line, using an overhand or underhand technique. The goal is to let the ball touch the ground on the opposing team’s side. If the ball lands outside the boundary lines, the points go to the team whose side it lands closest to. Playing sand volleyball is a fun team activity out in the sun, especially in hot weather. Badminton Beach badminton is an entertaining spin on this classic garden game. Similar to volleyball and tennis, this laidback game is great for all ages and intermediate abilities. Great for two to four players, this leisurely backyard game travels easily to the beach for hours of back-and-forth fun. High-quality badminton sets include highly visible boundary lines, net, and shuttlecocks. Players serve from the right half court when their current score is zero or an even number, and the left side of the court when their score is odd. Teams switch sides after each game and the winning team serves first on the next game. The winning team wins the bests of 3 games. Each game plays to 21 points, making it a longer beach game than others if played more competitively. This intermediate game makes for a great beach day competition with easy rules and skillful play that lasts for hours of fun in the sun. Like other garden games, it was a popular pastime for the Victorian upper class in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. But why is this game so popular, and how was it only recently inducted into the Olympics as an official sport?
Badminton had a simple start and was originally just two players hitting a shuttlecock between two racquets as many times as they could before it hit the ground. Eventually, this game had a more sophisticated evolution when it was brought back from British India to the English countryside in the 19th century. The Indian name, Poona, was transformed to Badminton, after the home of the duke who brought the game to England. Traditionally, a badminton set includes two to four racquets, a regulation-size net, and a couple of shuttlecocks. Standard racquets are smaller and more lightweight than tennis racquets. A shuttlecock is a small cone-shaped object with a cork or plastic head and feathered tails. It is also sometimes called a bird or birdie. The sport quickly became popular amongst the Victorian upper class, and like most popular culture at the time, an official club formed in Bath, and the first set of rules created. Since then, it took over seventy years since the formation of the Badminton Federation of England for the game to be played and recognized at the Olympics. While early on most of the Olympic competitors were European, the sport is now largely dominated by Asian countries, having won 69 of the 76 medals from 1992 to 2008. Wanting to have your own amateur game of badminton in your backyard? You’re in luck, as this leisurely game is easy to set up and requires only two or four players. Great for barbecues, family or corporate events, or summertime fun, badminton joins the garden game family for its simple rules and skillful play.
